BY MRT - Mass Rapid Transit (Singapore's equivalent of the Subway / Tube / Metro)

mapmrtIf You're Arriving in Singapore Between 5.30 a.m. And 11.15 p.m…

From the Airport, catch the MRT at Terminal Two. From Mondays to Saturdays (except public holidays), the first train departs the Airport at 5.30 a.m., whilst on Sundays and public holidays, the first MRT train departs at 6.00 a.m. Every day, the last MRT train departs the Airport at 11.15 p.m.

For now, as the new Transit line is not yet operational, you will have to alight at Bugis MRT Station and take a fifteen minutes walk towards Serangoon Road, Little India.

When the new MRT line goes operational in the later part of the year, from the Bugis Station, you will catch another train in the direction of Dhoby Ghaut MRT Interchange Station, only 1 stop away. At Dhoby Ghaut MRT Interchange Station, change to the MRT in the direction of Little India MRT Station. The Hostel lies between the new Little India (about 5 minutes stroll away) and the Bugis MRT Station (about 15 minutes stroll away).

The whole journey should cost S$1.80 or less.

We're now using contactless smart cards (ez-link card) for both our public buses and MRT. These are sold at MRT stations and bus interchanges for a discount price of S$13.00 (S$3.00 is the deposit) for the first six months. With this system you don't need to calculate the stages you are travelling and the price, this will be automaticallydeducted at the exit. (the advantage for the bus company is that people cannot underpay their fare anymore).

On boarding, you'll see two grey card readers. You tap the card on one and the maximum fare is deducted for the rest of the journey. A green light appears and a beeping sound is heard. On exiting you again tap your card on one of the card readers which are also placed at the exit. The system will then re-calculate the correct fare and refund the difference to your card. You will be able to see the card value & the fare deducted on the screen.

BY TAXI
Avoid taking the taxi unless you really have to. It's the fastest way of getting to the Hostel, but it's also the most costly.

There is an abundance of taxis at the Airport. All taxis in Singapore are metered and it's neither the practice nor custom to tip the drivers. You should just pay the fare on the meter. However, many surcharges are not reflected on the meter. Some of them are as follows:-

    • There is a surcharge of S$3 for taking the taxi from the Airport;
    • Between 5.00 p.m. to midnight on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, there is a surcharge of S$5;
    • Between midnight and 6.00 a.m., there is a surcharge of 50% of the fare;
    • From 6.00 p.m. on the eve of public holidays to midnight of the public holiday, there is a surcharge of S$1;
    • Between 7.30 a.m. to 9.30 a.m. and 5.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m. on Mondays to Saturdays, there is a surcharge of S$1 for taxis from 2 companies, CityCab and Comfort.
There are many other surcharges e.g. there is a surcharge for riding a Station Wagon cab or London Cab, there is booking fee of at least S$3 when you telephone to book a cab, there is a surcharge of 10% of the fare when you pay by credit card and there is a surcharge of between S$0.50 to S$2.50 when the taxi crosses an Electronic Road Pricing gantry. The whole journey should take about 20 minutes, and you can expect to pay about S$25 for the ride after midnight.
